Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

We are pleased to invite you to contribute to the upcoming Special Issue of Photonics titled “Terahertz Communications in Photonics”. With the rapid development of 6G wireless networks and beyond, the demand for ultra-high-speed and ultra-broadband communication systems has become more pressing than ever. Terahertz (THz) communication, benefiting from the ultra-wide bandwidth available in the THz spectrum (0.1–10 THz), has emerged as a key technology in efforts to meet these demands. However, practical implementation faces significant challenges, including high propagation loss, hardware limitations, and signal processing complexity.

Photonics-assisted THz technologies offer a promising route to overcome these limitations, leveraging the advantages of optical carriers for signal generation, modulation, transmission, and detection. This interdisciplinary area is attracting increasing attention from researchers in both photonics and wireless communication communities, driving innovation in THz signal generation, photonic integration, sensing, and system-level design.

This Special Issue aims to provide a comprehensive platform, presenting the latest advances in photonics-enabled THz communications, bridging the gap between theory, devices, and systems. The scope of this publication with the journal’s focus on photonic devices, systems, and applications, and seeks to highlight cutting-edge research that enables THz wireless communication through photonic techniques.

Original research articles and review papers are welcome. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following areas:

  • Photonic generation and detection of THz signals;
  • Integrated photonic circuits for THz communication systems;
  • Hybrid optical-wireless (fiber–THz) communication links;
  • High-speed signal processing and modulation schemes for THz;
  • Terahertz-over-fiber and photonics-assisted front-haul networks;
  • THz antennas and beamforming supported by photonics;
  • Experimental demonstrations of photonics-enabled THz links;
  • Applications of THz communications in sensing and imaging;
  • Photonic solutions to overcome THz propagation challenges.

We look forward to receiving your contributions.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Photonics is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
