Events and Processes: Rethinking Time, Creativity, and Reality in Continental and Process Philosophy

Dear Colleagues,

This Special Issue of the journal Philosophies invites papers that address the concepts of events and processes and how they enable us to rethink “Time, Creativity and Reality in Continental and Process Philosophy”. Events and processes have been at the center of work in 20th and 21st-century continental philosophy and process thought, unsettling our ready-made conceptualizations and habits of seeing and doing and of knowing and thinking. Some conceptions of events and processes challenge traditional frameworks in ontology, epistemology and metaphysics, and open up questions regarding the ultimate facts and entities in the sciences. To cite a few examples, Gilles Deleuze says “I've tried in all my books to discover the nature of events; it’s a philosophical concept, the only one capable of ousting the verb ‘to be’ and its attributes”. For Whitehead, process becomes the fundamental category, and in Bergson, duration takes ontological priority. How have the continental and process traditions defined and distinguished between events and processes? How have these concepts enabled a reconsideration of time and space, of mind and body, of life and consciousness, of movement and matter, of causality and creativity, and how we think about reality? How might a consideration of events and processes as fundamental categories transform how we understand and interpret work in the natural, social and formal sciences?

This Special Issue invites original research on events and processes, either together or individually, in relation to a wide range of theoretical, philosophical and scientific topics within the continental and process traditions. Submissions can explore philosophers within these broadly construed traditions.

Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a double-anonymized peer-review process. Philosophies is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
