Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Critically ill and surgical patients experience profound metabolic disturbances that require precise and individualized nutritional strategies. This Special Issue aims to explore and highlight the latest advancements in metabolic support, focusing on the integration of energy provision, metabolic measurements, and body composition monitoring to optimize patient outcomes in the intensive care unit (ICU) and perioperative settings.

Key topics of interest for this Special Issue include the role of micronutrient provision in critical care, the evolving use of supplemental parenteral nutrition, and the importance of perioperative nutritional support, from early optimization to postoperative recovery. We also invite contributions addressing prehabilitation in major surgery, with emphasis on improving physiological reserves before intervention. Additionally, the impact of gut microbiota modulation and its implications for immunity and nutrient metabolism in the ICU will be examined.

This Special Issue welcomes the submission of original research, reviews, and clinical insights that contribute to evidence-based, patient-centered approaches in critical care and perioperative nutrition.
