Diet and Oral Health (2nd Edition)
This special issue belongs to the section “Clinical Nutrition“.
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Diet and oral health are linked through complex biological, behavioral, and microbiological pathways that extend well beyond simple nutrient intake. Long-term dietary patterns, food processing, and texture influence not only enamel integrity and periodontal tissues but also salivary dynamics, neuromuscular function, and the ecological balance of the oral microbiome. Adequate availability of minerals and vitamins—such as calcium, phosphorus, and vitamins D, A, and C—remains essential for tooth mineralization, immune competence, and tissue repair; however, their effects must be interpreted within the broader context of overall dietary behavior.
Conversely, modern dietary habits characterized by frequent intake of fermentable carbohydrates and acidic foods are consistently associated with microbial dysbiosis, dental caries, periodontal inflammation, and erosive tooth wear. Nutritional deficiencies and eating disorders may further compromise oral health, manifesting as mucosal alterations, impaired wound healing, or functional disturbances related to mastication and salivary flow. Despite growing evidence, the causal mechanisms linking diet-induced microbiome changes to chronic oral diseases remain only partially understood.
Moreover, diet-related systemic conditions—such as diabetes, obesity, and metabolic disorders—can amplify oral disease progression, reinforcing the need for an integrated clinical and nutritional perspective.
This second edition of the Special Issue aims to expand and refine current knowledge on the relationships between diet, eating behaviors, the oral microbiome, and oral cavity pathologies, highlighting emerging evidence with direct clinical relevance.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Nutrients is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2900 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
