Chronic Headaches

Dear Colleagues,

Chronic headache is a complex condition characterized by headache occurring on 15 or more days per month for at least three months. Although “chronic headache” is not a formal diagnostic category in the International Classification of Headache Disorders (ICHD), chronic forms of several primary and secondary headache disorders are recognized.

Many headache disorders remain underdiagnosed and undertreated, despite causing substantial disability in patients’ daily lives. Headache disorders are among the most common neurological complaints worldwide and can have a major impact on quality of life, daily functioning, productivity, and work capacity. Despite advances in diagnostic approaches and pharmacological therapies, many individuals continue to experience recurrent or chronic headaches and may benefit from a broader, interdisciplinary approach to care.

This Special Issue will focus on the evaluation and treatment of chronic headache disorders and on the role of the interprofessional healthcare team in assessing, treating, managing, and improving outcomes for affected patients. Emphasis will be placed on prevention, timely diagnosis, appropriate treatment, and strategies to improve patients’ well-being in both daily life and the workplace.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Chronic migraine;
• Chronic tension-type headache;
• Medication-overuse headache (MOH);
• Hemicrania continua;
• New daily persistent headache;
• Etiology and pathophysiology of chronic headache disorders;
• Appropriate clinical evaluation and differential diagnosis;
• Pharmacological and nonpharmacological management strategies;
• Prevention and early intervention;
• Interprofessional approaches to care coordination, communication, and patient outcomes;
• Strategies to reduce disability and improve quality of life, daily functioning, and work capacity.

We welcome original research articles, systematic reviews, meta-analyses, and high-quality narrative reviews related to chronic headache disorders.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Medicina is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
