Ocular Oncology: Current Research and Future Directions

Dear Colleagues,

Ocular oncology is a rapidly evolving subspecialty at the intersection of ophthalmology, oncology, genetics, imaging, and precision medicine. Advances in diagnostic imaging, molecular profiling, targeted therapies, immunotherapy, and eye-preserving treatment strategies have transformed the management of both adult and pediatric ocular tumors. At the same time, improved survival rates have shifted attention toward long-term visual outcomes, quality of life, and survivorship issues, highlighting the need for multidisciplinary and patient-centered approaches.

This Special Issue, “Ocular Oncology: Current Research and Future Directions,” aims to provide a comprehensive and up-to-date overview of the field, integrating basic science discoveries with translational and clinical research. The Special Issue will showcase cutting-edge developments in the diagnosis and management of intraocular, orbital, and ocular adnexal tumors, including uveal melanoma, retinoblastoma, ocular metastases, lymphoproliferative disorders, and rare neoplasms.

We invite original research articles, systematic and narrative reviews, clinical trials, and translational studies that address emerging therapies, novel imaging techniques, genetic and molecular biomarkers, prognostic factors, and innovative surgical or radiation approaches. Submissions exploring artificial intelligence, telemedicine, health disparities, global ocular oncology, and future therapeutic strategies are also encouraged.

By bringing together contributions from international experts and multidisciplinary teams, this Special Issue seeks to advance knowledge, stimulate collaboration, and define future research priorities in ocular oncology, ultimately improving both survival and visual outcomes for patients worldwide.

Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process.
