Artificial Intelligence in Periodontology and Implantology
This special issue belongs to the section "Dental Biomaterials".
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
This Special Issue on Artificial Intelligence in Periodontology and Implantology aims to present state-of-the-art research and clinically oriented applications of artificial intelligence (AI) that are reshaping periodontal and implant dentistry. It is dedicated to exploring how AI-driven approaches can enhance diagnostic accuracy, treatment planning, risk assessment, and outcome prediction, thereby supporting evidence-based clinical decision-making and improving patient care.
The scope of this Special Issue includes, but is not limited to, machine learning and deep learning applications in periodontal and peri-implant diagnostics; AI-based analysis of radiographic, clinical, and digital data; automated image segmentation and classification; predictive modeling of disease progression and treatment outcomes; AI-integrated digital workflows for implant planning and guided surgery; and the role of AI in personalized and precision dentistry. Both methodological/technical contributions and clinically focused studies are welcome.
By bringing together original research articles, systematic and narrative reviews, and well-documented clinical or translational studies, this Special Issue aims to provide a comprehensive overview of current advances, limitations, and future directions of AI in periodontology and implantology. Particular emphasis is placed on clinically relevant innovations, validation studies, and transparent reporting that facilitate meaningful translation from research to daily clinical practice.
Within the existing literature, this Special Issue seeks to serve as a focused platform for researchers, clinicians, engineers, and data scientists, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and critical discussion. It aims to clarify the true clinical value of AI-based technologies, address ethical and practical challenges, and stimulate further high-quality research in this rapidly evolving field.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the Special Issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Journal of Functional Biomaterials is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2700 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
