COVID-19 and the Cardiovascular System: Implications for Risk Assessment, Diagnosis, and Treatment Options

Since December 2019, the COVID-19 pandemic has spread all over the world, with more than one hundred million confirmed cases to date. Multiple studies have progressively highlighted the strong connections between COVID-19 and the cardiovascular system. On one hand, adults with previous heart conditions (such as heart failure, coronary artery disease or cardiomyopathies) or with underlying cardiometabolic factors (such as diabetes, obesity or hypertension) are at increased risk for severe forms of COVID-19. On the other hand, recent studies have suggested a particular tropism of SARS-CoV-2 for cardiovascular cells, especially for endothelial cells and, potentially, cardiomyocytes, and cardiovascular outcomes are frequently reported in patients with COVID-19.

In this Special Issue, we invite original research articles and state-of-the-art reviews focused on current knowledge and future perspectives on the interactions between SARS-CoV-2 and the cardiovascular system, including these important topics: risk stratification according to the cardiovascular profiles of patients; direct vs. indirect mechanisms supporting cardiovascular injuries in COVID-19 patients; the diagnosis of cardiovascular injury; specific therapeutic approaches in COVID-19 patients according to cardiovascular involvement; the long-term cardiovascular effects of COVID-19.
