Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Drug repurposing has emerged as a powerful and cost-effective strategy for accelerating therapeutic innovation by identifying new clinical applications for existing drugs with well-established safety profiles. Beyond therapeutic repositioning alone, the development and preparation of repurposed drugs in advanced dosage forms—including nanocarriers, targeted delivery systems, modified-release formulations, and combination dosage forms—have opened up new avenues in enhancing drug synergy, bioavailability, and tissue specificity while minimizing toxicity.

This Special Issue will highlight recent advances in drug repurposing as a synergistic therapeutic strategy, with a particular focus on formulation science, advanced drug delivery technologies, and translational applications across various diseases, including cancer and infectious, neurological, and metabolic disorders. We welcome original research articles, reviews, and perspectives addressing formulation design, manufacturing strategies, pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic optimization, and clinical evaluation of repurposed drugs in innovative dosage forms. By integrating drug repurposing with advanced pharmaceutical technologies, this Special Issue will bridge the gap between bench-scale discoveries and clinically viable therapies, ultimately contributing to more effective, safe, and accessible treatment strategies.

Topics of interest include (but are not limited to) the following:

- Synergistic drug combinations involving repurposed agents;

- Mechanistic studies on drug–drug interactions;

- Nanotechnology or targeted delivery systems for combination therapy;

- Drug repurposing for cancer treatment (e.g., statins, antiparasitics, antifungals);

- Repurposed drugs in neurological and neurodegenerative diseases;

- Antimicrobial and antiviral synergy using existing medications;

- Computational approaches for predicting synergistic combinations;

- In vivo and clinical studies evaluating repurposed drug synergy;

- Formulation strategies (nanoparticles, liposomes, spanlastics, etc.) used to enhance combination efficacy;

- Safety, toxicity, and pharmacokinetic considerations in drug combination therapy.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. International Journal of Translational Medicine is an international peer-reviewed open access quarterly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 1200 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
