Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Since the identification of cannabinoids—the active ingredients of the cannabis plant—and subsequent discovery of the endocannabinoid system, global scientific research has made numerous breakthroughs that have established the foundations for medicinal cannabis.

Every day, progress is being made in determining the distribution of the components of the endocannabinoid system (ECS) and how they are modulated and regulated by endogenous and exogenous ligands. New compounds that act as endocannabinoids have been discovered, leading to the establishment of what we know as the endocannabinoidome or expanded endocannabinoid system.

The characteristics and properties of the ECS and its components have been explored in health and pathological conditions in various study systems, aiming to establish what mechanisms underlie the effects and symptomatic improvements observed in both study models and the traditional use of therapeutic cannabis.

Current research focuses on the effects and properties of acidic cannabinoids (CBDA, THCA) and minor cannabinoids (such as CBG, CBN, CBC, THCV and CBDV) as active ingredients, as well as the development and stability of derivatives based on these components.

Furthermore, research is still be conducted on establishing the biochemical and molecular basis of the entourage effect: the potential synergy between cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids present in a full-spectrum cannabis extract.

These research efforts have advanced the study of cannabinoids as a therapeutic alternative.

We are pleased to invite you to submit your articles to this Special Issue, “Research in Cannabinoid Therapeutics: Novel Insights and Products”.

It aims to collect original articles or reviews that predominately focus on innovative products and approaches to cannabinoid therapeutics. We particularly seek manuscripts that present advances in the therapeutic application of cannabinoids and characterize full-spectrum preparations. Studies that incorporate novel applications of cannabis derivatives for therapeutic use are also encouraged, given the growing interest in utilizing acidic cannabinoids or other cannabinoids.

In this Special Issue, original research articles and reviews are welcome. Research areas may include (but are not limited to) the following:

  • The biochemical and molecular basis of cannabinoid therapy, comparing it with the therapeutic effects of full-spectrum products (entourage effect).
  • Extraction and/or stabilization processes for cannabis derivatives used for therapeutic purposes.
  • Clinical studies and/or case reports exploring the therapeutic use of cannabis in human and non-human patients.

We look forward to receiving your contributions.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. International Journal of Molecular Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. There is an Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal. For details about the APC please see here. Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.

Benefits of Publishing in a Special Issue

  • Ease of navigation: Grouping papers by topic helps scholars navigate broad scope journals more efficiently.
  • Greater discoverability: Special Issues support the reach and impact of scientific research. Articles in Special Issues are more discoverable and cited more frequently.
  • Expansion of research network: Special Issues facilitate connections among authors, fostering scientific collaborations.
  • External promotion: Articles in Special Issues are often promoted through the journal's social media, increasing their visibility.
  • Reprint: MDPI Books provides the opportunity to republish successful Special Issues in book format, both online and in print.
