Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

This Special Issue is dedicated to nutraceuticals and functional and novel foods. Topics discussed here are the analysis of food composition, their in vitro and in vivo effects, and efficacy, mechanisms of action, safety, formulation, and development of these foods. Studies addressing implications of relevant food regulations and efficacy assessments of nutraceuticals, functional foods, and novel foods are welcome for submission.

Nutraceuticals and functional foods are among the most relevant and extensively studied alternatives to conventional treatments for numerous health conditions, especially when pharmacological therapies are not well tolerated. This field of research continues to evolve rapidly.

Novel foods, a growing challenge and opportunity in food science, are a frontier research topic. The European Union defines “novel foods” as foods that are not consumed to a significant degree by humans prior to May 15, 1997. Since food regulations vary worldwide, different perspectives and concerns may arise. Nonetheless, novel foods are attracting increasing interest as new or unconventional sources of valuable nutrients. Our understanding of how they can affect the microbiome and human health is expanding. In addition to providing essential macro- and micronutrients, they may also help prevent the onset and progression of chronic diseases. Examples of novel foods include new nutrient sources or extracts obtained through innovative processes such as fermentation, which is another growing area of interest in food science.

We look forward to receiving your contributions.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Foods is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2900 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
