Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Due to their safety and efficacy, nutraceuticals and functional foods are among the most relevant and extensively studied alternatives to conventional treatments for numerous health conditions, especially in cases in which conventional pharmacologic therapy is not well tolerated, and this field of study is under continuous development. The endpoint for their use, as well as that of probiotics, prebiotics, synbiotics, and postbiotics, with respect to their differences and functions, is represented by reaching or resetting homeostasis, which is the state of optimal functioning for a specific organism. This may have far-reaching implications for the economy, health, sustainability, green approach, economic support, reductions in health care costs and use of pharmaceuticals, and the development of rural communities. In this complex context, novel foods may also play a relevant role.

Novel foods are newly developed or innovative foods produced using new technologies and production processes. The European Union defines “novel foods” as those which were not consumed to a significant degree by humans prior to May 15, 1997. However, global food regulations differ, and this can be problematic, emphasizing the need for a single universally accepted definition for nutraceuticals and novel foods.

In spite of these concerns, novel foods are attracting increasing interest as new or unconventional sources of valuable nutrients, and our understanding of how they can affect the microbiome and human health continues to grow. In addition to containing important macro and micronutrients, they can also help to prevent the onset and progression of chronic diseases by improving human health. Examples of novel foods include new sources of macro and micronutrients or extracts obtained from existing food or food derived from new production processes, such as fermentation.

This Special Issue is dedicated to nutraceuticals, functional and novel foods, and potential topics may include analysis of their composition and effects, in vitro and in vivo testing of these foods and their mechanisms of action, safety, formulation, and realization, among others. Manuscripts that address the implications of relevant food regulations and assessments of the efficacy of nutraceuticals, functional foods, and novel foods will also be considered.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Foods is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2900 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.

Benefits of Publishing in a Special Issue

  • Ease of navigation: Grouping papers by topic helps scholars navigate broad scope journals more efficiently.
  • Greater discoverability: Special Issues support the reach and impact of scientific research. Articles in Special Issues are more discoverable and cited more frequently.
  • Expansion of research network: Special Issues facilitate connections among authors, fostering scientific collaborations.
  • External promotion: Articles in Special Issues are often promoted through the journal's social media, increasing their visibility.
  • e-Book format: Special Issues with more than 10 articles can be published as dedicated e-books, ensuring wide and rapid dissemination.
