Emerging Technologies for Waste Treatment, Pollution Control and Resource Recovery, 2nd Edition
This special issue belongs to the section "Environmental Pollution, Toxicology and Restoration".
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Since the Industrial Revolution, rapid industrialization, urbanization, and population growth have substantially increased global waste generation. Effective waste management has become a critical environmental priority, with significant implications for ecosystem protection, public health, and sustainable resource utilization. Conventional waste-disposal approaches, particularly landfilling, are increasingly constrained by limited land availability, environmental sustainability considerations, and the need to better manage potential impacts on soil and water quality. Therefore, developing sustainable and efficient waste-management solutions is essential to support global environmental sustainability and resource conservation.
In recent years, emerging technologies for waste treatment, pollution mitigation, and resource recovery have gained increasing attention as promising approaches to optimize waste management, enhance environmental performance, and recover valuable resources from waste streams. These technologies play an important role in advancing circular economy principles by enabling waste valorization, reducing reliance on primary resource extraction, and promoting sustainable resource utilization. Advances in innovative treatment processes, material recovery technologies, and waste-to-resource strategies provide new opportunities to achieve sustainable resource management and address global environmental priorities.
This Special Issue aims to present and disseminate the latest advances in sustainable waste-treatment, pollution-mitigation, resource-recovery, and circular-economy approaches. We invite original research articles and comprehensive review papers that explore innovative technologies, methodologies, and strategies for efficient waste management, environmental protection, and the valorization of waste resources. Contributions highlighting fundamental mechanisms, technological developments, practical applications, and future perspectives in this rapidly evolving field are particularly encouraged.
Topics of interest for publication include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Novel technologies and advanced methods for waste treatment and management with minimal or no secondary pollution;
- Innovative strategies for pollution reduction, prevention, control, and removal;
- Resource recovery from waste through advanced processes, including but not limited to hydrometallurgy, pyrometallurgy, and electrometallurgy;
- Emerging circular economy strategies and sustainable approaches for waste minimization and resource utilization;
- Novel procedures and technologies for enhancing the value of waste-derived materials and products;
- Advanced processes for waste conversion, recycling, and sustainable resource recovery;
- Environmental assessment and life-cycle analysis of waste management technologies.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Environments is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 1800 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
