Integrated Territorial Approaches to Circular Economy: Innovation, Governance, and Local Value Chains

This Special Issue explores the intersection between regional economic development and circular economy transitions. While regional growth has historically relied on linear resource consumption, modern economic paradigms necessitate a shift towards closed-loop systems that prioritize resource efficiency, waste reduction, and sustainable industrial practices.

The focus of this issue is to analyze the catalysts—ranging from innovative energy solutions and technological advancements to supportive governance and territorial policy—that enable regions to decouple economic growth from environmental degradation. We invite high-quality research papers, reviews, and case studies that examine how local productive systems, including agro-food and industrial sectors, can integrate circularity into their development strategies.

Situated within the current literature on regional competitiveness, this issue bridges the gap between macroeconomic development theories and the practical, technology-driven requirements of industrial transition. Our goal is to provide a comprehensive outlook on how territories can effectively navigate the transition to a resilient, circular, and sustainable economy, ensuring that regional development remains both socially inclusive and environmentally responsible.

Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a double-anonymized peer-review process. Economies is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
