Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Superalloys are high-performance metallic materials designed to operate at high temperatures, often exceeding 70% of their melting point. They are primarily based on nickel, cobalt, or iron and are characterized by exceptional mechanical strength, resistance to thermal creep deformation, and high corrosion and oxidation resistance. Because of these characteristics, superalloys are essential components in demanding environments, including aerospace jet engines, marine turbines, and nuclear reactors. Their unique properties are derived from a complex microstructure created by advanced manufacturing technology. Traditionally, superalloy components are produced by investment casting, particularly for single-crystalline (SX) products. By eliminating grain boundaries, SX technology significantly enhances creep resistance, making it a standard technology for high-pressure turbine blades. However, the field is currently being transformed by additive manufacturing (AM), such as laser powder bed fusion (L-PBF) and electron beam melting (EBM). These novel techniques enable the production of components with complex geometries and internal cooling channels that are very difficult to achieve via traditional casting, thanks to precise thermal management that controls crystal orientation and precipitate distribution. Despite these advantages, manufacturing superalloys remains challenging due to their susceptibility to hot cracking and the need for rigorous post-processing heat treatments to stabilize the γ'-phase. Current research focuses on optimizing superalloy composition and manufacturing parameters and techniques.

Considering the different directions of development of superalloys and the requirements for single-crystalline components made of such alloys, you are welcome to present the results of your research on this topic in the Special Issue of Crystals entitled "Advances in Research on Single-Crystal Superalloys".

All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Crystals is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
