Dear Colleagues,
Carbon-based materials play a pivotal role in advancing next-generation technologies due to their tunable structural, electrical, and mechanical properties. In recent years, the paradigm shift toward sustainable and eco-friendly precursors, such as biochar and other biomass-derived carbons, has gained significant momentum. This Special Issue, “Sustainable Carbon-Based Materials Design, Properties, and Applications,” aims to provide a comprehensive platform for the latest advancements in the synthesis, characterization, and application of green carbon materials.
We seek original scientific research focusing on the design of sustainable carbon matrices, novel functionalization techniques (e.g., metal coating, doping, and compositing), and their crystallographic and microstructural evolution. Furthermore, studies exploring the integration of these sustainable materials into high-performance applications, particularly in energy storage systems (such as supercapacitors and advanced batteries), electromagnetic interference shielding, environmental remediation, functional textile structures and nanocomposites, are highly encouraged. By bridging the gap between sustainable synthesis routes and cutting-edge material properties, this Special Issue will contribute to the ongoing transition toward greener and more efficient carbon technologies.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Crystals is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
