Advanced Scaffolds and Tissue Engineering Innovations
This special issue belongs to the section "Biomedical Engineering and Biomaterials".
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
This Special Issue, “Advanced Scaffolds and Tissue Engineering Innovations,” will highlight emerging strategies that integrate biomaterials science, bioengineering, cell biology, and regenerative medicine to address current challenges in tissue repair and regeneration. Advanced scaffolds have evolved beyond passive structural supports into dynamic, biomimetic platforms that regulate cellular behavior, deliver therapeutic factors, and create favorable microenvironments for tissue formation. This issue will explore innovative scaffold architectures, including three-dimensional porous structures, nanofibrous matrices, hydrogels, decellularized extracellular matrices, and hybrid and composite biomaterials designed to reproduce key biochemical and mechanical features of native tissues.
Particular emphasis will be placed on 3D bioprinting, biofabrication, and emerging manufacturing technologies that enable precise control over scaffold geometry, spatial organization, vascularization, and cellular distribution. Contributions addressing smart and stimuli-responsive scaffolds, controlled drug and growth-factor delivery, extracellular-vesicle-based approaches, and immunomodulatory biomaterials are also encouraged. These technologies offer new opportunities to improve cell survival, promote tissue integration, and regulate inflammation during regeneration.
The Special Issue will further examine the application of advanced tissue-engineering approaches for bone, cartilage, skin, nerve, cardiovascular, dental, and other clinically relevant tissues. Studies combining computational modeling, artificial intelligence, materials optimization (e.g., cell or protein interactions), organoid systems, and personalized or patient-specific scaffold design are particularly relevant. Translational research addressing scaffold biocompatibility, biodegradation, mechanical performance, manufacturing reproducibility, sterilization, and regulatory considerations will also be welcomed.
By bringing together interdisciplinary research and perspectives, this Special Issue aims to provide a comprehensive overview of recent advances and future directions in scaffold-based tissue engineering. It will serve as a platform for researchers to present innovative materials, fabrication strategies, mechanistic insights, and translational solutions that can accelerate the development of next-generation regenerative therapies and move tissue-engineering technologies closer to clinical application.
Sincerely,

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Bioengineering is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2700 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
