Targeting Mitochondrial Dysfunction and Oxidative Stress for Neuroprotection

Dear Colleagues,
The incidence of neurodegenerative diseases is increasing worldwide and represents a growing burden to global health. This is particularly apparent for Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias and Parkinson’s disease, but rarer neurodegenerative conditions also have significant impacts on quality of life. Yet treatment options for neurodegenerative conditions remain limited, with no cures and few therapeutic options available.
Many neurodegenerative diseases share several common characteristics, including increased mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidative stress. In fact, these changes are evident early in many neurodegenerative conditions and therefore may offer opportunities to alter disease progression.
The goal of this Special Issue is to bring together research focusing on the therapeutic potential of targeting mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidative stress. Researchers are invited to submit original research articles and review articles related to, but not limited to, the following topics:
- Mechanisms underlying oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction-mediated neurodegeneration.
- Therapeutic interventions targeting improving antioxidant response and mitochondrial function.
- Evaluating markers of oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction as relevant biomarkers for diagnosis or therapeutic target engagement.
Clinical, animal and in vitro work are all appropriate for this issue. The research included in this issue will further our understanding of how mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidative stress contribute to neurodegeneration and how targeting these processes could lead to novel treatments for neurodegenerative diseases.
