Advances in Explainable, Neuro-Symbolic, and Quantum Machine Learning: Towards Trustworthy and Intelligent Systems
This special issue belongs to the section "Evolutionary Algorithms and Machine Learning".
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
As machine learning systems become increasingly embedded in high-stakes domains such as healthcare, finance, and autonomous systems, the need for models that are not only accurate but also interpretable, robust, and trustworthy has never been more pressing. This Special Issue aims to bring together recent advances in Explainable AI (XAI), Neuro-Symbolic AI, Graph Neural Networks, and Quantum Machine Learning, with a focus on developing algorithms that are both intelligent and accountable.
We welcome contributions that address the theoretical foundations, algorithmic innovations, and real-world applications of interpretable and trustworthy AI systems. Topics of particular interest include, but are not limited to, the integration of symbolic reasoning with deep learning, the use of graph-based and knowledge-driven approaches to enhance model transparency, emerging techniques in quantum machine learning and quantum optimisation, and methods for improving fairness, robustness, and privacy in machine learning pipelines.
This Special Issue seeks to provide a platform for researchers and practitioners to share novel methodologies, empirical studies, and critical perspectives that advance the development of responsible and intelligent systems. We particularly encourage submissions that bridge multiple subfields, such as neuro-symbolic reasoning applied to graph learning, or quantum-enhanced optimisation for interpretable AI.
We look forward to your contributions.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Algorithms is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 1800 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
