Cover Story: This study investigated the adsorption capacity of a superhydrophobic and thermally stable bio-substrate in removing microplastic particles (MPPs) from aqueous systems. The adsorption efficiency of the bio-substrate toward pristine microparticles of PP, PVC, PA6, LDPE, HDPE, and their blend was evaluated. The effects of temperature and binding environments on the adsorption process were also determined. The bio-substrate exhibits superior efficiency in removing MPPs from aqueous systems, showing an adsorption capacity of qe = 2807 mg/g from synthetic industrial water. Physisorption dynamics for the MPPs/adsorbent system are provided and discussed in this work. Overall, the bio-substrate is highly effective in adsorbing MPPs from aqueous systems, with the added advantages of low cost, sustainability, and scalability for practical applications. View this paper
