Cover Story: The presence of aflatoxin (AF) M1 in milk and dairy products represents a worldwide concern. We have determined in this study the efficacy of a commercially available smectite clay (TOXO® MX, Trouw Nutrition, Amersfoort, The Netherlands) on multiparous lactating Holstein dairy cows exposed to AFB1 challenges on the presence of AFM1 in dairy milk, together with a deep evaluation of the performance parameters, blood chemistry, and liver inflammatory markers in dairy cows. The results showed that the tested smectite clay was effective in adsorbing AFs in the gastro-intestinal tracts of cows, thus reducing the excretion of AFM1 into milk. View this paper
