Cover Story: The production of hydrogen by electrochemical water splitting, exploiting the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), is gaining importance. Since this reaction is catalytically activated, there is now renewed interest in the development of efficient HER electrocatalysts. Here, we describe a new synthesis method to prepare graphene quantum dot (GOQD)–MoSx nanohybrids with different MoSx stoichiometries (x = 2 and 3) in order to investigate their chemical stability using operando X-ray absorption spectroscopy and combined photoemission/electrochemical in line measurements under hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) conditions.
