Cover Story: Mechanical expansion due to intercalation of lithium ions in graphite, as well as SEI growth and pressure rise in cylindrical battery cells, poses additional challenges for engineers designing battery modules but can also be used for battery cell state estimation due to its correlation with state of charge and state of health. However, it has been previously assumed that battery cells expand uniformly due to their cylindricity. Instead of the expected uniform expansion, the cell takes on a potato shape. The roundness of the cell decreases and bulges, and valleys form around the circumference depending on the position and orientation of the jelly roll inside the housing. View this paper
