Cover Story: All recognized risk factors for cardiometabolic diseases, such as hypertension, obesity, type 2 diabetes, and vascular diseases, are associated with chronic low-grade inflammation. Inflammation is also believed to contribute to the occurrence of acute vascular events, including heart attacks and strokes. Endothelial dysfunction, an early indicator of cardiovascular disease, results from an imbalance between vasodilators and vasoconstrictors produced by circulating platelets and vessel wall enzymes. Inflammation plays a critical role in the development of atherosclerosis and atherothrombosis (plaque and clot formation).
