Cover Story: This study exploits a unique heme biosynthesis pathway in Gram-positive bacteria to identify novel antimicrobials. The coproheme decarboxylase, chdC, of Listeria monocytogenes, is shown from both views, with both the substrate and inhibitor prodigiosin that was identified on the screen. This is one of several inhibitors of heme biosynthesis in firmicutes that was identified, using the screen described in the accompanying manuscript. These compounds target an essential biosynthetic process that has not been explored previously. We thank Samira Hassan Sheikh for her help in developing the art work that used the 6fxq chdC structure rendered with Pymol. View this paper
