Cover Story: Cosmological inflation requires flat scalar potentials to mimic an early cosmological constant which drives the exponential expansion of the Universe. This flat potential must be stable with respect to radiative corrections. In a supersymmetric theory, these corrections are naturally suppressed. However, if supersymmetry is broken, large loop corrections can spoil the flatness of the potential. After inflation, restoring a thermal, radiation-dominated Universe is necessary in all inflationary models. The coupling of the inflaton to Standard Model fields induces the loop corrections which must remain small. Supersymmetry may be preserved or broken during inflation, and thus loop corrections may enable one to select preferred supergravity models of inflation. View this paper
