Cover Story: Suicide is one of the leading causes of death worldwide, accounting for nearly 800,000 deaths every year. Several psychological and psychosocial factors have been taken into account as possible predictors of suicidality. Only recently have affective temperaments been considered as possible factors linked for suicide, especially in patients with mood disorders. In a large sample of patients with mood disorders, the presence of cyclothymic and irritable affective temperaments was significantly associated with the presence of lifetime suicide behaviours, while depressive temperaments increased the likelihood of presenting suicidal ideation. Conversely, the presence of hyperthymic affective temperaments was found to be protective for the presence of lifetime suicidal behaviours and ideation. View this paper
