Cover Story: Neuroinflammation is an essential pathomechanism of Alzheimer’s disease, strictly linked to the amyloid cascade hypothesis. Although classically defined as a CNS-confined process, a central role for the peripheral immune system is well recognized today. In fact, a bidirectional communication is operative, with monocytes and released soluble factors—cytokines and chemokines—shuttling between one compartment and the other. Assessing neuroinflammation-associated biomarkers in periphery represents, then, an exciting window for monitoring AD and, perhaps, for tailoring novel treatments. View this paper.
