Cover Story: We designed 3D-printed microfluidic elements that split and recombine fluid streams to achieve high-efficiency mixing. We compare these to helical mixers that operate by chaotic advection. We developed a new method of assessing device performance that incorporates resident volume, hydraulic resistance, and mixing efficiency. Components from this standardized mixer library can be selected based on application requirements for reagent volume and mixing efficiency. View this paper.
