Cover Story: While sorting cells based on their membrane or internal structures has important implications for cell biology, these properties usually do not translate into common properties that have been used for sorting, for example, size, shape, or deformability. We show that by combining electrokinetics with deterministic lateral displacement (DLD) in a microfluidics device, it is possible to sort cells continuously based on differences in their membrane and internal structures. Using heat to deactivate cells, which changes their viability and structure, we demonstrate sorting of a mixture of viable and non-viable cells for two different cell types. We expect our work to form the basis for the development of simple, low-cost, continuous label-free methods that can separate cells and bioparticles based on their intrinsic properties.
