Topic Information

Dear Colleagues,

Bridging length scales from nanometers to meters remains one of the grand challenges in materials science and engineering. Recent advances in synthesis, characterization, modeling, and manufacturing are now enabling the translation of nanoscale phenomena into functional systems and real-world applications at the macro scale. This Topic aims at gathering original research and review articles that explore the full spectrum of innovation across scales—from fundamental material discovery to integrated systems and scalable manufacturing methods.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

  • Materials: Nanostructured materials, 2D materials, metamaterials, biomaterials, composites, and smart/adaptive materials
  • Systems: Nano-enabled devices, sensors, energy systems, biomedical platforms, and multiscale architectures
  • Methods: Multiscale modeling, advanced characterization, nanofabrication, additive manufacturing, self-assembly, and scale-up strategies
  • Applications: Sustainability, energy storage and conversion, healthcare, electronics, aerospace, and environmental technologies
  • Integration and translation: Design principles for bridging nanoscale properties to macroscale performance, reliability, and manufacturability.

We welcome contributions that provide new insights into mechanisms, demonstrate proof-of-concept systems, or address challenges in scaling, standardization, and industrial adoption.

This Topic has been inspired by the discussions that emerged during the preparation of NanoInnovation 2026 (https://www.nanoinnovation2026.eu/home/), which embodies the same spirit and mission: to provide a forum for dialog and cross-fertilization across disciplines, highlighting the role of nanoscience and nanotechnology as key enablers of deep technologies. Importantly, manuscript submissions are not limited to conference participants but are open to the entire community interested in the topics of the event, thereby ensuring broad and inclusive participation.

Manuscript submissions are welcomed from all researchers with an interest in the areas of focus of this Topic to foster a broad and inclusive scientific dialog.
