Dear Colleagues,
Adopted in September 2015, the 2030 Agenda introduced the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) with the primary objective of achieving sustainability through the sustainable use of natural resources and the preservation of ecosystems, including forests, deserts, wetlands, rivers, marine and coastal ecosystems, along with their biodiversity. In heading toward a greener future, the promotion of sustainable chemical technologies emerges as a transformative strategy for addressing multifaceted environmental protection and energy production challenges. Utilizing sustainable chemical technologies for industrial effluent treatment, biomass-to-bioenergy conversion and process intensification addresses water scarcity concerns, leads to waste valorization, enhances resource efficiency, and provides affordable and clean energy, aligning with circular economy and sustainability principles. Thus, sustainable chemical technologies address specific environmental challenges and actively contribute to the broader global agenda for sustainable development. The journal Sustainability (ISSN 2071-1050; CiteScore 5.8; IF 3.9) is presently hosting a Special Issue entitled "Sustainable Chemical Technologies for Industrial Effluent Treatment, Biomass-to-Bioenergy Conversion, and Process Intensification: A Greener Future." This issue is dedicated to disseminating high-quality papers that scrutinize forefront research on solutions in industrial effluent treatment, biomass-to-bioenergy conversion and process intensification, with the aim of contributing to the fulfillment of the SDGs.
The current Special Issue aims to advance the existing literature on sustainable chemical technologies by presenting scientific articles encompassing the following topics:
- Sustainable chemical technologies applied to industrial wastewater treatment;
- Development or enhancement of separation technologies using process intensification strategies;
- Case studies on intensified separation technologies for efficient and eco-friendly production processes;
- Strategies for the carbon sequestration and mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions via adopting third-generation biofuels;
- Case studies on thermochemical technologies for biomass-to-bioenergy conversion;
- Valorization of agro-industrial residues, forest residues, municipal solid waste, food processing residues, and animal manure for bioenergy and renewable chemicals;
- Innovations and recent advancements in catalysts employed for energy and environmental applications;
- Renewable chemicals derived from biomass pyrolysis and their prospects for use in the chemical industry and transportation fuel sector;
- Life cycle assessment (LCA) of conversion processes for the sustainable production of bioenergy and renewable chemicals from biomass;
- jCo-processing of organic feedstocks and synthetic wastes (plastics, polymers, etc.) to generate bioenergy and renewable chemicals;
- Case studies on the integration of effluent treatment, biomass-to-bioenergy conversion and process intensification within the biorefinery context.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process.
