Dear Colleagues,

The Guest Editors are inviting submissions to a Special Issue of Sustainability on the subject area of “Environmental Impact Assessment and Renewable Energy Technologies”. With the rapid economic development and the gradual improvement of the level of industrialization and urbanization, the problem of environmental pollution is being paid more and more attention. In addition, the global climate has deteriorated dramatically. The international consensus on carbon neutrality has accelerated the shift of global energy from resource dependence to technology dependence. To effectively solve ecological and environmental problems, reduce carbon dioxide emissions and gradually replace coal and other fossil resources, the development of renewable energy is the fundamental way and the only choice. The scale of development and utilization of renewable energy has expanded rapidly, especially wind power and photovoltaic. Green energy development plays an important role in reducing carbon emission intensity. The development and utilization of non-fossil energy is the main way to promote green and low-carbon energy transition. Countries are giving priority to non-fossil energy in energy development, and are vigorously promoting low-carbon energy to replace high-carbon energy and renewable energy to replace fossil energy. The purpose of this Special Issue is to provide a platform for the exchange and publication of research related to renewable energy and environmental impact assessment to help realize the sustainable development of human society and economy.

Carbon neutrality in municipalities can be achieved by combining individual heating and district heating solutions involving the use of renewable energy sources. Each approach has advantages and disadvantages, but the best solution depends on the specific circumstances of each municipality. As an environmentally friendly and efficient energy use, a decentralised heat supply contributes to achieving energy conservation and emissions reduction goals. Decentralised energy use, such as solar collectors with thermal energy storage or biomass as a resource, reduces dependence on centralised heat generation and transmission. The appropriate infrastructure for connection to district heating networks has not yet been built. On the other hand, it is easier to make investments to construct proper infrastructure in the case of large-scale centralised heat supplies. Moreover, a centralised heat supply with renewable energy sources can provide more inhabitants with renewable heat energy. Within the framework of the study, the possibilities of using renewable energy sources in one of the municipalities of Latvia—the Carnikava parish of Ādaži Municipality—are analysed. The study examines two scenario complexes including individual heating solutions in buildings or district heating solutions with a centralised approach. The study evaluates several alternatives to increase the share of RES (solar collectors, biomass, heat pumps, etc.) in the centralised heat supply. To evaluate individual RES solutions in various municipal buildings, this study evaluates alternatives with different technical solutions that increase the use of RES in heat supply. Full article

Considering the evolution of the spatial pattern of regional economic growth in China, this paper analyzes whether environmental regulation (ER) and environmental knowledge spillover (EKS) contribute to regional economic growth using panel data and the spatial Durbin model of China’s 31 provinces and cities from 2005 to 2020. The findings indicate that (1) there are significant characteristics of economic agglomeration in the spatial distribution of economic growth in China’s different provinces and cities according to the Moran’s index; (2) the environmental regulation has a nonlinear “U”-shaped effect on the regional economic growth, which is first suppressed and then promoted, and the spatial effect presents the same “U” shape as that of the local effect; (3) the environmental knowledge spillover, as measured by the number of green patents, shows a positive contribution on the economic growth and is significantly active in terms of both the local spillover and inter-regional spillover; (4) Eastern China enjoys a larger ER dividend than the central and western regions, and EKS shows a significant positive contribution to economic growth in the eastern, central, and western regions; (5) other factors also influence the regional economic growth besides the core explanatory variables, including the research and development expenditure (RD), human capital (Edu), urbanization level (Urb), government intervention (Gov), and opening-up level (Open), all of which show a positive effect on the economic growth, whereas the science and technology expenditure (Ti) has not played a positive role in promoting economic growth. In this study, a technical index system for nuclear accident emergency response measures was established and comprehensively evaluated by studying the impact of time, ventilation speed, and leakage speed on the radiation consequences after a loss of coolant accident (LOCA) in a marine reactor. The weight of each index was calculated by the analytic hierarchy process (AHP), and the weight of the radiation protection measure in the second-level index emergency measure was 0.625, accounting for the maximum proportion. The weights of improving radionuclide detection technology in chambers, improving detection capability, and improving the diagnosis efficiency of radiation damage in the three-level indicator emergency measures were 0.4442, 0.4384, and 0.4521, respectively, accounting for the maximum proportions. The fuzzy comprehensive evaluation method was used to quantify and comprehensively evaluate the index system of emergency measures. The quantitative evaluation result was 82.8 points, indicating that the evaluation result was adequate. Therefore, the nuclear emergency response measure based on the radiation consequences of a marine reactor LOCA is reasonable and feasible. It provides valuable measures and practical guidance for the emergency response of a marine reactor LOCA, and dramatically reduces the harm of radiation to staff and the environment. Full article

With the increasingly competitive environment in the steel market and the proposed dual carbon goals, the government will need to consider many factors, such as the realization of energy conservation and emission reduction targets, the production game between enterprises, and the adjustment of production strategies of enterprises. Therefore, this research constructs a repeated dynamic game model including carbon trading policy and other mixed reduction policies, introduces a bounded rationality output adjustment strategy, and studies the response, stability, and complexity of different scenarios in the steel industry. The results are as follows: (1) With the gradual increase in emission reduction targets, the output adjustment policies that enterprises can implement will show an increasing trend under the single carbon trading policy. (2) Under the mixed emission reduction policy, the output adjustment policies that affect enterprises with larger outputs will show an increasing trend when targets continue to increase. (3) Smaller-output enterprises will be restricted and affected by more factors, such as emission reduction targets and larger output enterprises. (4) The influence of carbon trading benchmarks on market stability region is not obvious. In summary, enterprises should comprehensively consider emission reduction policies, output adjustment policies, carbon trading benchmarks, and other factors to ensure that the enterprises and the entire market will not fall into an imbalanced state. Emission of air pollutants constitutes one of the major hazards to human health and life. Particulate matter and harmful gases emitted by residential heating, especially, occupy a significant position among the sources of air pollution. This paper presents the research results concerning the composition of ashes obtained from the combustion of fuel samples composed of wood pellets, eco-pea coal, and coal pellets (trade name—VARMO) with various admixtures of waste materials. The study stand was equipped with a boiler having a nominal power of 18 kW. Several of the most characteristic chemical elements identified in the ash were used as the basis to classify the combustion of waste. A model based on a statistical method was designed. Within the framework of the research, a statistical multivariate technique, discriminant analysis, was applied. The statistical model was constructed for two groups of ash samples and 19 chemical elements indicating their contamination. The high prediction power of the model and the validation (fitting was 90.00% and 85.19%, respectively) confirmed the possibility of the practical application of this proprietary method. It permitted identification of the markers (chemical elements) in the ash. It confirms that the fuel is combusted with the admixture of waste materials in a given boiler. Based on the analyses performed, it was found that from among the 19 elements, five, namely K, Ti, Zn, Ca, and Rb, were selected as the markers because they are characterised by the highest discrimination ability. In addition, they are the best indicators of the contamination level of the ash samples that were examined. Full article

To promote the precise governance of China’s new-energy vehicle (NEV) industry, this paper quantitatively analyzes 204 policy texts on the NEV industry in China since 2007 and constructs an evaluation system of policy effectiveness from three dimensions of policy attributes, policy objectives, and policy measures to reveal the effectiveness and evolutionary trends of China’s NEV industry policies. In addition, this paper explores the two-way effects of different types of policy measures on the NEV supply and demand markets through an econometric model to reveal the differential impact effectiveness of various policy instruments in China’s NEV industry. The results indicate that China’s NEV industry has changed from “government-driven” to “government-driven + market-driven”, and the multi-sectoral policy coordination needs to be further improved; the dynamic evolution over the years reveals a similar pattern of change in the total effectiveness of policy issuance as influenced by the number of policies; the quantity of patents in China is large but the quality of patents is insufficient, and an overall problem of low level of core technology is being faced; taxation and subsidy measure, technical innovation measures, social guidance measures, and environmental support measures all effectively promote the development of the supply-side market, while taxation and subsidy measures, social guidance measures and legal regulation measures can better promote the development of the demand-side market; the impact of financial support measures on both supply and demand-side markets is not significant. As an important means to reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, environmental regulation (ER) and foreign direct investment (FDI) have become popular research topics in recent years. Most studies have examined the single impact of ER or FDI on CO2 emissions, while few investigated the regional heterogeneity and the spillover effect of different environmental regulations (ERs) on CO2 emissions and neglected the impact of the interaction mechanism between ER and FDI on CO2 emissions. This paper applies the spatial Durbin model (SDM) to explore the impact of different ERs and FDIs on regional CO2 emissions in China’s 30 provinces from 2003 to 2019. The results indicate that there are significant differences and regional heterogeneity in the effects of different environmental regulations on CO2 emissions at the national level. FDI has a significant promoting effect on CO2 emissions in the early years (2003–2009), especially in the eastern and western regions, but its effect is not significant in the late period (2010–2019). At the regional level, the abatement effects of the interaction term between FDIs and ERs are generally significant, indicating that ERs can influence the reduction effect of FDIs. Regulatory environmental regulation (RER) in the eastern region, command environmental regulation (CER), and economic environmental regulation (EER) in the central region can significantly affect the emission reduction effect of local FDI.
