Sustainable and Regenerative Tourism: Mobility, Community Resilience, Smart Destinations and Inclusive Transformation

Tourism plays a significant role in territorial development and is increasingly linked to sustainability, resilience, social inclusion, and quality of life. Contemporary destinations face challenges associated with climate change, demographic transitions, mobility patterns, resource management, overtourism, spatial inequalities, and the need to strengthen local communities. These challenges have stimulated growing interest in sustainable and regenerative approaches that support long-term environmental integrity, community well-being, and territorial competitiveness. Within this context, sustainable and regenerative tourism has emerged as important fields of research and practice. Discussions have expanded to include community resilience, governance, sustainable mobility, accessibility, smart destination management, circular economy initiatives, and innovative models of territorial development. These themes contribute to understanding how destinations can improve their capacity to respond to social, environmental, economic, and technological changes while creating value for residents and visitors. This Special Issue aims to advance knowledge on the relationships between sustainable and regenerative tourism, mobility systems, community resilience, smart destinations, and inclusive transformation processes. Contributions may address theoretical developments, methodological approaches, policy frameworks, governance arrangements, empirical case studies, and comparative international analyses.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
