Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

We are pleased to announce a Special Issue of Sustainability on “Agroforestry Engineering and Technologies for Sustainable Production and Circular Economy”.

According to the FAO (2018), agriculture has a major impact on the environment, contributing to greenhouse gas emissions, water consumption, nitrates and ammonia pollution. Climate change is also expected to have significant adverse effects on agriculture. The circular economy can be applied to agriculture to reduce the impacts of the industry and continue to feed the growing global population. Circularising agriculture is based on the principles of minimising demands on external inputs, closing nutrient loops, and reducing the environmental impact from discharges and runoff (FAO, 2021).

Agroforestry is the science and art of integrating forestry and agriculture to sustainably maximize the economic and environmental performance of agricultural production systems. Agroforestry systems are used in a variety of different ecological and economic conditions to increase the sustainability of agriculture and income to farmers and are especially important for the reduction of commercial fertilizer use, because of their ability to recover, recycle, or efficiently utilize nutrients. Particularly in developing countries, planting trees together with crops or on pasture lands can help fight hunger and malnutrition, as trees are a source of food, fuel and non-wood products that can be either directly consumed/used or sold.

Conceptual and empirical studies that analyse and investigate the most sustainable agroforestry, systems and technologies, as well as successful case studies of agroforestry circular economy are welcome for submission to this Special Issue. The Special Issue will cover aspects related to agroforestry, silvopastoral, agrosilvicultural and agrosilvopastoral systems including:

  • Environmental, economic and social assessment of systems, technologies, products and supply chains;
  • Innovative technology;
  • Precision agriculture;
  • Time-and-motion study;
  • Conservation of biodiversity;
  • Carbon storage, carbon market and carbon credit;
  • Willingness to pay;
  • Consumer behaviour;
  • Cost-benefit analysis (CBA);

The papers must show originality and make a significant contribution to the scope of the Special Issue.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
