Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
The global transportation sector is at a pivotal moment. As societies worldwide strive to meet growing mobility needs, we face the critical challenge of aligning these demands with urgent climate action and sustainability objectives. Recent advances in vehicle electrification, alternative fuels, and smart, connected technologies are fundamentally reshaping how people and goods move. At the same time, this transition raises complex questions related to infrastructure development, energy system integration, equity, and effective policy design.
This Special Issue aims to gather and showcase high-quality research that addresses these challenges and supports the transition toward cleaner, smarter, and more resilient transportation systems. We welcome contributions that align with Sustainability’s focus on the environmental, social, and economic dimensions of sustainable development, particularly in the contexts of transportation and mobility.
We invite original research articles and review papers that explore, among others, the following themes:
- Electric and hybrid vehicles and charging infrastructure;
- Alternative fuels, including hydrogen, biofuels, and synthetic fuels;
- Smart and connected transportation systems;
- Green mobility and energy-efficient logistics;
- Integration of renewable energy into transportation networks;
- Transportation policy, regulation, and sustainability assessment;
- Life cycle and environmental impact analysis of transportation systems;
- AI, machine learning, and data-driven transportation planning and optimization.
We particularly encourage interdisciplinary work that bridges technology, data science, systems analysis, and policy perspectives. By nurturing a dialog between methodological innovation and real-world application, this Special Issue seeks to provide valuable insights for researchers, practitioners, and policymakers working toward the development of low-carbon, efficient, and inclusive transportation systems.
We look forward to receiving your submissions.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
