Digital Transformation and Artificial Intelligence for Sustainable Management of the Built Environment: From Buildings and Cultural Heritage to Public Asset Portfolios and Territorial Scale

Dear Colleagues,

The built environment—from individual buildings and cultural heritage to public asset portfolios, infrastructure and the territorial systems within which they are embedded—is one of the largest accumulated assets of contemporary societies, and one of the most consequential for sustainability. How it is designed, operated, maintained, retrofitted and reused largely determines energy consumption, carbon emissions, climate resilience, occupant well-being, and the preservation of economic and cultural value. Digital transformation and artificial intelligence are rapidly reshaping how these assets are understood, governed and valorised. Building Information Modelling (BIM), Digital Twins at building, asset and territorial scales, geographic information systems (GISs), extended reality (XR), IoT-based monitoring, predictive analytics and AI-assisted decision-support tools are enabling more sustainable, data-driven and anticipatory management of the built environment across various scales.

For this Special Issue we invite submissions of original research articles, reviews and case studies on AI-enabled methodologies for asset knowledge and valorisation; multi-scale Digital Twins from buildings to public asset portfolios and territorial systems; data-driven maintenance, retrofitting and life-cycle optimisation; governance, organisational and competence models for the digital transition; and applications to public asset management, cultural heritage protection, and the integration between building and territorial scales.

All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process.
