Innovative Green Water Technologies for Effective Environmental Pollution Control

This special issue belongs to the section “Environmental Sustainability and Applications“.

Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Climate change is intensifying the global water crisis by altering precipitation patterns, increasing the frequency of extreme weather events, and stressing existing water resources. As societies face these challenges, the need for sustainable water treatment technologies becomes more pressing. Achieving net-zero emissions is a critical goal to mitigate climate change, and green technologies in water treatment play a pivotal role in this effort.

This Special Issue of the Sustainability Journal seeks to explore innovative green technologies that contribute to sustainable water management while supporting the transition towards a net-zero carbon future. By focusing on reducing environmental impacts, improving energy efficiency, and leveraging renewable resources, we aim to highlight advancements that align with global sustainability goals.

We invite researchers, practitioners, and experts to submit their high-quality papers addressing the development, application, and evaluation of green technologies in water treatment. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOPs): development of novel AOPs for water treatment, application of green catalysts and photocatalysts, etc.
  • Bio-Based Water Treatment Technologies: use of natural materials and biological agents in water purification, innovative applications of microbial processes and bioreactors, etc.
  • Sustainable Coagulants and Flocculants: development of eco-friendly coagulants from renewable resources, evaluation of the efficiency and sustainability of new flocculants, etc.
  • Green Membrane Technologies: advances in membrane materials and processes with reduced environmental impact, integration of green practices in membrane filtration systems, etc.
  • Energy-Efficient Water Treatment Systems: development of low-energy or energy-neutral treatment technologies, optimization of energy use in existing treatment systems, etc.
  • Waste Minimization and Resource Recovery: technologies for minimizing waste and recovering valuable resources during water treatment, circular economy approaches in water treatment processes, etc.
  • Nanotechnology for Water Treatment: green synthesis of nanomaterials for water purification, applications and implications of nanotechnology in sustainable water treatment, etc.
  • Hybrid and Integrated Water Treatment Systems: innovative combinations of green technologies for improved treatment performance, case studies and practical implementations of hybrid systems, etc.
  • Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and Environmental Impact: assessing the environmental impact of green technologies, comparative studies of traditional vs. green water treatment technologies, etc.
  • Regulatory and Policy Aspects: guidelines and standards for implementing green technologies in water treatment, policy frameworks supporting the adoption of sustainable practices, etc.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
