Innovative Strategies for Sustainable Biomass Valorization and Wastewater Treatment
This special issue belongs to the section “Environmental Sustainability and Applications“.
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
The growing global emphasis on sustainability has highlighted the critical need for innovative approaches to biomass valorization and wastewater treatment. Biomass, including agricultural residues, industrial by-products, and organic waste, represents a renewable resource that can be converted into bioenergy, biofuels, chemicals, and other value-added products. Simultaneously, wastewater contains valuable nutrients and organic matter that, if treated appropriately, can be recovered and reused, contributing to a circular economy.
This Special Issue will focus on innovative strategies that integrate biomass utilization and wastewater treatment to maximize resource efficiency while minimizing environmental impacts. It will cover advanced biotechnological, chemical, and engineering approaches for converting biomass into high-value products and for developing sustainable wastewater treatment methods. Topics of interest include bioenergy production, biorefineries, anaerobic digestion, microbial fuel cells, nutrient recovery, and advanced oxidation processes, among others. Interdisciplinary studies combining experimental research, pilot-scale demonstrations, techno-economic analyses, and life-cycle assessments are particularly encouraged.
The purpose of this issue is to provide a platform for sharing recent advances, fostering collaboration, and promoting holistic solutions that link biomass valorization with wastewater management. Unlike much of the existing literature, which often treats these areas separately, this issue will examine integrated approaches that align with circular economy principles and sustainable industrial practices. By highlighting novel technologies, case studies, and strategies for environmental sustainability, it aims to guide researchers, technologists, engineers, and policymakers toward practical and scalable solutions.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
