Dear Colleagues,
The rapid growth of industrial activities and population has intensified challenges associated with water pollution, resource depletion, and carbon emissions, highlighting the need for sustainable environmental and chemical engineering solutions. This Special Issue, “Sustainable Environmental and Chemical Engineering: Wastewater Treatment and Functional Materials Application”, aims to showcase recent advances in innovative wastewater treatment technologies, functional materials, resource recovery, and carbon management. Particular emphasis will be placed on the development of advanced functional materials, advanced oxidation processes, electrochemical environmental technologies, contaminant transformation mechanisms, nutrient recovery, and carbon capture and utilization.
This Special Issue seeks to bridge fundamental materials chemistry with practical environmental applications by highlighting material design strategies, reaction mechanisms, and engineering approaches for next-generation sustainable technologies. Beyond conventional pollutant removal, this issue emphasizes integrated strategies that couple wastewater treatment with resource recovery and carbon reduction toward a circular economy. Contributions from environmental engineering, chemical engineering, materials science, and related disciplines are expected to provide new insights into sustainable solutions for water security, resource conservation, and low-carbon development.
In this Special Issue, original research articles and reviews are welcome. Research areas may include (but are not limited to) the following:
- Sustainable wastewater treatment: Innovative processes and technologies for the removal, transformation, and control of emerging and conventional contaminants.
- Functional materials for environmental applications: Design and application of nanomaterials, catalysts, adsorbents, and other advanced materials for environmental remediation.
- Electrochemical environmental technologies: Electro-Fenton processes, electrocatalytic pollutant removal, electrochemical phosphorus recovery, and electrochemical scaling control.
- Resource recovery and carbon management: Nutrient recovery, carbon capture materials, electrochemical CO2 capture, and carbon capture and utilization.

All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process.
