Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

This Special Issue, titled “Towards Industry 5.0: Sustainable, Resilient Production and Human-Centric Manufacturing”, looks at how industry is evolving beyond the automation and efficiency focus of Industry 4.0. The goal is to bring together fresh perspectives and practical experiences that show how sustainability, resilience, and human-centricity can work hand in hand to shape the future of manufacturing.

Sustainability is seen not only as an environmental responsibility but also as a driver of competitive and adaptive production. Human-centric manufacturing highlights the importance of people—developing skills, ensuring well-being, and creating workplaces where humans and technology complement each other. Resilient production reflects the growing need to adapt to uncertainty, disruptions, and rapid change while remaining aligned with long-term goals.

Alongside these pillars, this Issue will also explore how data, artificial intelligence, and machine learning can support greener, smarter, and more agile production systems. Real-world examples and case studies are especially encouraged, showing how theory translates into practice.

By combining conceptual insights with practical evidence, this Special Issue aims to enrich the literature and offer useful guidance to researchers, industry leaders, and policymakers working to design production systems that are not only efficient but also sustainable, resilient, and truly human-centered.

In this Special Issue, original research articles and reviews are welcome, and research areas may include (but are not limited to) the following:

  • Sustainable production as a pillar of Industry 5.0, including research or analysis on its relation to human-centric manufacturing and resilient production;
  • Human-centric manufacturing as a pillar of Industry 5.0, including research or analysis on its relation to sustainable production and resilient production;
  • Resilient production as a pillar of Industry 5.0, including research or analysis on its relation to human-centric manufacturing and sustainable production;
  • Green manufacturing assisted by data-driven and/or machine learning and/or artificial intelligence approaches towards overcoming Industry 5.0 challenges;
  • Data-driven and machine learning- or artificial intelligence-assisted production as strategies and methods to foster the Industry 5.0 paradigm;
  • Business models to face Industry 5.0 challenges;
  • Roadmaps and strategies to overcome Industry 5.0 challenges.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
