Urban Road Safety and Vulnerable Road Users: Behaviour, Infrastructure, and Emerging Mobility Challenges
This special issue belongs to the section "Sustainable Transportation".
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Rapid urbanization, evolving mobility patterns and emerging micromobility systems are transforming the safety landscape of modern cities. From vulnerable road user interactions with motorized traffic and reduced-speed environments to innovative infrastructure design and effective traffic enforcement strategies, contemporary urban road safety requires integrated, data-driven, and human-centered approaches.
This Special Issue focuses on emerging challenges and innovative solutions in urban road safety, with emphasis on vulnerable road users, micromobility, behavioural analysis, infrastructure design, and the effectiveness of lower speed limits. The Special Issue aims to complement the existing literature by integrating traditionally separate research areas under the broader framework of safe and sustainable urban mobility.
Submissions on topics such as pedestrian safety and gap acceptance, reduced speed limits in urban areas, crash injury severity analyses, traffic enforcement, simulation-based safety assessment, and innovative roundabout design are encouraged.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
- Effectiveness of lower speed limits in urban areas (e.g., 30km/h zones);
- Safety assessment of urban intersections;
- Railway level crossing safety;
- Micromobility safety and behaviour;
- Pedestrian gap acceptance and crossing behaviour;
- Crash frequency and injury severity analysis of vulnerable road users;
- Data-driven and spatial approaches to urban safety analysis;
- Simulation-based evaluation of pedestrian safety measures;
- Safe and efficient urban infrastructure design and operations;
- Safety and operational performance of innovative roundabout design;
- Road safety policies and enforcement strategies;
- Helmet use, distraction and other behavioural risk factors of micromobility users;
- Safety implications of emerging mobility systems.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
