Intelligent Sustainable Built Environments: AI, Robotics, and Digital Twins for Net-Zero Futures
This special issue belongs to the section "Green Building".
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
The convergence of artificial intelligence (AI), robotics, and digital twins (DTs) is redefining how we design, construct, operate, and sustain the built environment. Moving beyond digital documentation, this sector is entering an era of intelligent, adaptive, and sustainable systems that actively contribute to net-zero futures.
This Special Issue, “Intelligent Sustainable Built Environments: AI, Robotics, and Digital Twins for Net-Zero Futures”, invites cutting-edge research on how intelligent technologies drive climate-neutral, resilient, and efficient built environments. Topics of interest include the following:
- AI and ML for sustainable AEC: Generative design, predictive maintenance, embodied carbon modeling, and lifecycle optimization.
- Digital Twins for sustainability: Real-time sensing, energy efficiency, disaster resilience, and city-scale digital ecosystems.
- Construction robotics and automation: Autonomous machinery, collaborative robots (cobots), prefabrication, and human–robot collaboration.
- Integration of PropTech and real estate intelligence: AI in property valuation, investment decision-making, adaptive reuse, and sustainable asset management.
- Urban intelligence and Net-Zero cities: Coupling buildings, infrastructure, mobility, and renewable energy using AI-driven DTs.
- Ethics, trust, and governance: Data interoperability, fairness, cybersecurity, and responsible adoption of intelligent systems.
By linking digital innovation with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), this Special Issue will supplement the existing literature in Sustainability by providing interdisciplinary, practice-oriented, and globally relevant perspectives.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
