Sensor-Enabled Intelligent Surgery: Intelligent Sensing and Imaging, Surgical Robotics, and Smart Image-Guided Technology
This special issue belongs to the section “Biomedical Sensors“.
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
This Special Issue focuses on sensor-enabled intelligent surgery. The recent advancement of artificial intelligence as well as smart sensing and imaging techniques is revolutionizing every area of surgery. As these technologies continue to evolve, they offer unprecedented opportunities to surgery, generating potential benefits, including reduced incision size and scarring, minimized soft tissue damage, and improved safety. In response to the continued and growing demand, we welcome contributions that explore the integration of intelligent sensing and imaging techniques, surgical robotics, and smart image-guided technology to develop intelligent solutions for computer-assisted surgery.
Submissions should focus on a range of applications, including, but not limited to, the following:
- Intelligent sensing and imaging techniques for surgical inventions;
- Intelligent medical image analysis techniques for the planning and execution of surgeries;
- Intelligent radiotherapy surgeries;
- Surgical robotics;
- Surgical data science;
- Intelligent integration of augmented reality or virtual reality for surgical interventions;
- Smart image-guided technology.
We seek original research, prototype development, and technical solutions that illustrate practical applications of sensing and imaging across these sectors. Our goal is to advance the understanding of how these technologies can shape the future of surgery, making significant contributions to both academia and industry. While we recognize the value of clinical studies, we particularly encourage and will prioritize submissions that introduce innovative techniques, refine established methods, or offer fresh methodological perspectives, with originality and methodological advancement serving as key criteria for consideration.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sensors is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
