Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

We are very pleased to invite you to contribute to the Special Issue “Optical Biosensors: From Fundamental Optics to Diagnostic Applications”. Optical biosensors utilize light–matter interactions for the detection of biological/biochemical changes, providing high sensitivity, fast response and, in many cases, label-free and real-time operation. Progress in photonics, plasmonics, nanophotonics, magneto-optics, optical materials and device engineering are providing new opportunities for more sensitive and miniaturized biosensing platforms. In particular, surface plasmon resonance and related optical sensing techniques are powerful tools for detecting refractive-index changes and molecular interactions at interfaces. The emerging nanostructured and two-dimensional materials bring new opportunities in improving sensitivity, selectivity, and detection limits.

This Special Issue seeks to bring together advances in fundamental optical mechanisms, materials and device design, sensor modeling and optimization, and emerging biomedical and diagnostic applications. Emphasis will be given to the correlation between optical phenomena and practical biosensor performance such as sensitivity, detection limit, stability, reproducibility and possible translation to diagnostic use.

This Special Issue invites original research articles and review articles. Areas of possible research include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Basic optical theories and light–matter interactions in biosensing;
  • Propagating surface plasmon resonance (SPR) and localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) based biosensors;
  • Magneto-optic SPR and magnetoplasmonic biosensors;
  • Biosensing platforms in nanophotonics and plasmonics;
  • Two-dimensional and advanced functional materials for optical biosensors;
  • Optical fiber, waveguide, photonic-crystal and metasurface biosensors;
  • Bio-sensing based on label-free and refractive index;
  • Biological fluid analysis and biomarker detection;
  • Optical biosensors for biomedical and diagnostic applications;
  • Sensor sensitivity, selectivity, detection limit, stability and reproducibility;
  • Modeling, simulation, design and optimization of optical biosensors;
  • Integrated, miniaturized and point-of-care optical sensing technologies.

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Photonics is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
