Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The integration of photonics into intelligent technology has given rise to a transformative area of research: intelligent photonics. By combining the parallelism, bandwidth, and efficiency of photonic systems with the adaptability and computational power of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML), intelligent photonics is unlocking new frontiers across diverse fields. From revolutionizing optical communications and sensing to enabling neuromorphic computing and advanced imaging systems, this interdisciplinary field serves as a cornerstone for next-generation technologies.

Intelligent photonics leverages advancements in AI, ML, and data-driven methods to design, optimize, and enhance photonic systems. These systems promise to address pressing challenges in scalability, energy efficiency, and performance in applications spanning telecommunications, optical computing, quantum technologies, biomedical imaging, and beyond. The scope of intelligent photonics also extends to the development of novel photonic devices, architectures, and methodologies that capitalize on AI-driven insights to redefine the limits of optical technologies.

This Special Issue invites submissions that present original research and review articles focusing on cutting-edge advancements in intelligent photonics and its wide-ranging applications. We encourage contributions that showcase innovative concepts, experimental results, and theoretical models aimed at advancing this dynamic field. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:

Photonics for AI:

  • Novel photonics devices and systems for intelligent applications;
  • Intelligent optical switching, routing, and network architectures;
  • Photonic neuromorphic computing and quantum technologies;
  • Advanced imaging and sensing enabled by intelligent photonics;
  • Energy-efficient photonic systems for data centers and telecommunications.

AI for photonics:

  • AI and machine learning in photonic design, optimization, and fabrication;
  • AI-driven modeling and control of photonic processes;
  • Integration of photonics in autonomous and biomedical systems.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Photonics is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
