The Role of Diet in Allergic Diseases: Immune Modulation and Beyond

Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Allergic diseases, including atopic dermatitis, asthma, and food allergies, are increasingly linked to environmental factors such as air pollution, climate change, and biodiversity loss. These pollutants not only disrupt immune balance but also impair epithelial barriers and induce epigenetic changes, exacerbating allergic conditions and their prevalence across generations. The exposome—comprising all environmental exposures—has emerged as a critical determinant of allergic disease development.

Nutrition plays a pivotal role in mitigating the adverse effects of adverse environmental factors. More diverse diets rich in antioxidants and anti-inflammatory components have been shown to counteract oxidative stress and inflammation caused by air pollution and to modulate immune responses, improving allergic outcomes. Moreover, sustainable dietary patterns contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and preserving biodiversity, addressing the root causes of climate-induced allergic exacerbations.

This Special Issue aims to explore the interplay between nutrition, allergic diseases, and environmental factors. Topics ranging from the molecular mechanisms of nutritional modulation to public health policies promoting sustainable living for combating the rising global burden of allergic diseases will be accepted.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Nutrients is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
