Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
The current human diet is rich in fats, especially saturated fatty acids, and sugars. Additionally, irregular, unbalanced meals and lack of physical activity contribute to obesity, which affects more and more people around the world. According to the World Health Organization (2024), 43% of people in the world are overweight, and as many as 16% are obese. Increased body weight directly negatively affects the concentration of insulin in the blood, further causing a decrease in glycemic control, leading to prediabetes and ultimately type 2 diabetes.
Many drugs are used to treat diabetes, but they can have side effects. Dietary supplements and additives do not replace treatment, but they can effectively support it or mitigate some of the side effects.
In this Special Issue, we will focus on the latest research on the impact of diet, dietary supplements, and lifestyle on the development of diabetes, with particular emphasis on the preventive and side effects mitigative, effects of omega-3 fatty acids and polyphenols. We particularly welcome high-quality scientific studies and comprehensive reviews on the following topics: (i) mechanisms that could explain the beneficial effects of dietary supplements containing omega-3 fatty acids and/or polyphenols on diseases such as diabetes and related diseases, and (ii) interactions between dietary supplements and recently popular antidiabetic and anti-obesity drugs.
In this Special Issue of Nutrients titled “The Role of Omega-3 Fatty Acids and Polyphenols in Diabetes and Diabetes-Related Diseases”, we invite you to submit original research papers as well as review articles based on the latest available literature on this topic.
