Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The oral cavity constitutes the initial segment of the digestive tract and, as its integral part, plays a role in the mechanical breakdown of food and its preliminary digestion. It is also an open ecosystem influenced by a variety of both external and internal factors, reflecting the systemic homeostasis of the body. Therefore, it is one of the diagnostic areas that is easily accessible to clinical examination, allowing for rapid assessment of general health. The oral cavity is distinguished by a dedicated bodily fluid—saliva. Moreover, the most common oral diseases, such as dental caries and periodontal diseases, are classified as lifestyle-related diseases due to their association with certain diets and lifestyle choices. These are also chronic conditions caused by an imbalance between the biofilm and the host’s immune response. Proper nutrition not only supports the healthy development of the oral cavity but also plays a key role in maintaining an adequate immune response, which may be disrupted in chronic systemic inflammation. Oral diseases tend to progress more rapidly in malnourished populations, but obesity also contributes to their development.

The oral cavity plays a vital role in maintaining both general health and quality of life, yet it is often underestimated in clinical discussions. As a periodontologist, Iinvite you to contribute your valuable research to this Special Issue, which will focus on the impact of diet on oral health. We welcome original research articles, reviews, and clinical studies that explore the complex relationship between nutrition and oral diseases, prevention strategies, and systemic implications. Your contributions will help to deepen our understanding of this important topic and promote integrated approaches to oral and general health.

Research areas may include the following: oral health, oral mucosa, periodontal problems, symptoms of systemic diseases in oral cavity; all of them connected with diet but also with supplements and biostimulators.

I look forward to receiving your contributions.
