Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Biological Nitrogen Fixation is the conversion of inert dinitrogen gas into ammonia, an assimilable source of nitrogen for most organisms. This biochemical reaction has a global biogeochemical impact and is critical for nitrogen input into many ecosystems. Despite being performed only by a select, albeit diverse, group of prokaryotes, nitrogen fixation is also of the utmost importance for crops. Associative and symbiotic relationships between plants and nitrogen-fixing bacteria are diverse, complex, and inspiring, as amazing biological solutions are involved, including the development of new plant organs. It has long been recognized that nitrogen often limits crop productivity. Many agronomical practices have been designed to cope with nitrogen limitation, and related biotechnological products are more sophisticated than ever before, with modern synthetic biology and metabolic remodeling techniques being implemented.
This Special Issue will consist of original research articles covering physiology, biochemistry, genetics, genomics, evolution, and applications of free-living, associative, and symbiotic nitrogen fixation, as well as how plants select, accommodate, and exchange nutrients with nitrogen-fixing microorganisms.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Microorganisms is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
